Embracing Female Athletics and Period/Pelvic Pain Awareness with AIMA
This July, AIMA is dedicated to celebrating female athletes and highlighting the often-overlooked challenges they face, particularly in relation to period and pelvic pain. We are thrilled to shine a spotlight on the inspiring 1252 Project, created by former Japanese national swimmer Hanae Ito. This project is making waves in raising awareness about menstrual health among young female athletes, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge and resources needed to manage their menstrual cycles effectively and maintain peak performance.
Hanae Ito’s Journey
Hanae Ito, an accomplished swimmer who competed on Japan’s national team, faced the realities of menstrual health firsthand. As a teenager, her period was simply a monthly occurrence she had to deal with, without understanding its implications on her performance and mental health. She was unaware of conditions like PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) and PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) and had no knowledge of contraceptives and their safe usage.
Reflecting on her experiences, Hanae realized that the lack of information and guidance significantly impacted her athletic career. Her story resonates with many female athletes who face similar challenges, often in silence and without the support they need.
The Birth of the 1252 Project
Motivated by her experiences, Hanae Ito founded the 1252 Project with a mission to educate and empower young female athletes about menstrual health. The project’s name symbolizes the menstrual cycle's average length (28 days) multiplied by the four years of an Olympic cycle, underscoring the continuous impact menstruation has on an athlete's journey.
Objectives of the 1252 Project
The 1252 Project aims to provide comprehensive menstrual health education to female athletes, their mentors, and even male athletes. Here are the core objectives:
- Education for Female Athletes: The project offers workshops, seminars, and resources to educate female athletes about their menstrual cycles, the effects of PMS and PMDD, and the safe use of contraceptives. This knowledge empowers them to make informed decisions about their health and performance.
- Mentor and Coach Training: Coaches and mentors play a crucial role in an athlete’s development. The 1252 Project provides training for these influencers to understand menstrual health better and support their athletes effectively.
- Inclusive Knowledge Sharing: The project also targets male athletes, promoting a comprehensive understanding of menstrual health. This inclusivity fosters a supportive environment where female athletes feel understood and supported by their peers.
